Concrete leveling, known as slabjacking or mudjacking, is used to level out uneven concrete surfaces such as sidewalks, driveways, and patios. However, not every settled concrete area can be raised through this process. For instance, badly cracked concrete does not have good long-term stability and may need replacement. Some restrictions may prevent your concrete from being raised, such as steps or gazebos constructed on top of your concrete. Also, previous repairs or replacement to your concrete may prevent your slabs from being returned to their original height and condition.

The estimating process has evolved using digital technology. Photos often provide a qualified and experienced contractor with the initial information to determine if your concrete can be raised. The best option is to get an assessment from a tradesman. Many companies will send a salesman out to your home. While this may sound convenient, it may result in an evaluation by an unqualified individual who lacks the years of experience and background in concrete repair necessary to provide a proper assessment. It may also result in “upselling,” additional home services, or a higher cost and a sense of urgency to sign and accept terms on the spot with discount offers if you” sign today.” It is always best to give proper time and consideration to any repair, cost, and who will complete your repair onsite. Here is how a concrete leveling appointment might work:

  1. Initial Inspection: If an assessment cannot be provided through photos, a concrete leveling contractor, or as mentioned above, a salesperson, will come to your property to inspect the concrete surface that needs to be leveled. They will assess the extent of the damage and determine the best course of action to level the concrete.
  2. Preparation: The contractor will prepare the area around the concrete surface by cleaning it thoroughly and removing any debris or loose material.
  3. Drilling: Small 5/8” to 1” holes are drilled into the concrete surface strategically, usually about 6-8 feet apart.
  4. Injection: A mixture of cement, sand, and water, or a poly foam, is injected through the drilled holes to lift the concrete slab to its desired level.
  5. Finishing: Once the concrete is leveled, the holes are filled with cement and finished with a trowel.
  6. Clean up: The contractor will clean up the work area, removing excess material and debris.

The entire process typically takes a few hours to complete, depending on the size and complexity of the job. Once finished, you can use the leveled surface as normal.

What To Look for When Selecting a Concrete Leveling Contractor

When selecting a concrete leveling contractor, several key factors should be carefully considered to ensure a successful and satisfactory outcome for your project. Firstly, expertise and experience are paramount. Look for contractors with a proven track record in concrete leveling, preferably with a substantial portfolio of completed projects showcasing their skills.

Additionally, licensure and certifications are crucial indicators of a contractor’s professionalism and adherence to industry standards. Make sure the contractor holds all necessary licenses and certifications required by local authorities.

Moreover, the technology and techniques employed by the contractor should be considered—modern methods, such as mudjacking, offer efficient and durable solutions for concrete leveling. Poly jacking is another method some contractors offer. A contractor utilizing state-of-the-art equipment and following best practices is likelier to deliver high-quality results.

Furthermore, reputation and customer reviews provide valuable insights into the contractor’s reliability and satisfaction. Seek testimonials from previous clients and assess the contractor’s reputation through online reviews and ratings.

Lastly, communication and transparency are vital throughout the project. Choose a contractor who communicates effectively, listens to your needs, and provides clear estimates and timelines. A transparent and collaborative approach ensures that expectations are aligned and potential issues are addressed promptly, leading to a smoother and more successful concrete leveling experience.
